Mario Melchiot: Arsenal have no chance of snatching title from Chelsea

The former Blues star isn't convinced that the Gunners can catch the Premier League leaders.

Former Chelsea defender Mario Melchiot has told the Alan Brazil Sports Breakfast Show that Arsenal have no chance of winning the title.

The Gunners come up against the Premier League leaders on Sunday afternoon, with Jose Mourinho’s side knowing a victory would leave them just three points away from sealing their first crown since 2010.

Melchiot believes that his former side will turn up at the Emirates looking to continue their unbeaten streak, which now stretches to 14 games after last week’s win over Manchester United.

“No, I don’t think there’s any way Arsenal can get back into the Premier League title race,” he said.

“Jose Mourinho won’t let Chelsea slow down, he’ll be on the training ground saying, ‘Arsenal are trying to catch us’.”

The former defender also believes that it is Mourinho’s mentality in particular that will see the Blues to the title come the end of the season.

The win over Louis Van Gaal’s United last weekend was a clear demonstration of this, with the away side having dominated the statistics in the game but failing to properly test Chelsea throughout.

Afterwards, Mourinho was evidently not bothered about what the statistics showed, saying all that mattered was the win, and Melchiot says that desire for maximum points is what will see them to victory again on Sunday.

“His [Mourinho’s] game is all about making you think he’s not worried by anything. While, at the training ground, he’ll be working on it,” he added.

“In his mind there’s nothing else that he wants more than a win. He won’t go for a draw. That will put everything to bed and they will win the title.”
