Liverpool legend Jamie Carragher highlights importance of an Arsenal win against Chelsea

Liverpool great Jamie Carragher looks ahead to Sunday’s Premier League game between Arsenal and Chelsea at the Emirates Stadium.

Liverpool legend Jamie Carragher has told Sky Sports that a win for Arsenal against Chelsea at the Emirates Stadium on Sunday will give them more belief for next season.

The Gunners will host their London rivals at home in the Premier League and will be determined to maintain their current run of great form.

Arsenal are 10 points behind league leaders Chelsea in second place in the table, and many observers will suggest that a win on Sunday could give the Gunners a chance of catching the Blues.

Former Liverpool defender Carragher does not seem to think so, but he believes that victory for Arsenal will give them more confidence for next season’s Premier League campaign.

“Arsene Wenger will know, if they want to compete and win trophies, Chelsea and Mourinho are going to be in the way so they have to start taking points off them,” the 37-year-old told Sky Sports.

“You could argue that it’s not mathematically out of Arsenal’s hands if they win but his game could, from Arsenal’s point of view if they won, give them more belief for next season than actually do damage to Chelsea this season.”

While a win is unlikely to do much damage to Chelsea as they will still be a good seven points clear at the top of the Premier League table, but it is too early to speak about Arsenal’s title chances next season.

True, winning against the Blues at home will enhance the confidence of the Arsenal players, but things could change next season and Chelsea could become a better side with top-class summer signings.

Moreover, a win on Sunday will not prove much other than the fact that on the day Arsenal were the better team than Chelsea.

How many times have Arsenal started a Premier League season as title-contenders, and how many times have they ended up just happy to be in the top four?
