The Argentine attacker has spoken out about his bond with the Brazilian right-back.
The pair have played together since the full-back joined the Catalan side from Sevilla, with the duo operating down the right flank for the Blaugrana. They have combined to devastating effect in 2015.
Messi has spoken out about the pair’s friendship, stating that the pair have grown closer over the years.
"We all get on well, but I've always been closest to Dani Alves, because we played down the right of the pitch together when he joined Barca,” he told FourFourTwo.
"We've spent a lot of time together on and off the pitch and we've developed a great friendship in our personal lives. That also helps a lot in games".
Alves is a common source for Messi’s goals and as such the Catalan side will have to think carefully over the veteran defender’s contract situation.
The Brazil international is out of contract this summer at Barcelona, with the defender refusing to pen a new deal to date and potentially leaving the historic club on a free transfer ahead of next season.
However, clearly with Alves and Messi playing well together on the pitch and having a personal friendship off it, it seems to be in Barcelona’s best interest to extend the veteran’s current deal.
