EU mulls creation of tech regulator: Report

The European Union is contemplating the creation of a regulatory body to oversee multiple tech platforms operating in the Old Continent, the Wall Street Journal reported Thursday.

The creation of such an agency would be the latest step taken by the EU in its ongoing battle against several tech companies, many of which are based in the U.S.

Last week, the EU filed antitrust charges against Google, alleging that the company "abused its dominant position" within the online search market.

Nevertheless, this initiative still has a long way to go in order to become policy since a proposal has not been presented to the European Commission, the EU's executive branch, the newspaper added, citing an internal policy document.

Neither Google nor the European Commission immediately respond to CNBC's request for comment.
