Florian Thauvin could be the next star to leave Marseille, as the club lose patience with the youngster.
French club Olympique de Marseille have already come to terms with the fact that André Ayew and André-Pierre Gignac will both leave as free agents this summer, but it looks like they won’t be the only ones. Florian Thauvin has been linked with a move to Tottenham Hotspur this summer by the Daily Mail and now the story is gathering pace in France.
Ayew and Gignac are leaving because the club just can’t afford to keep star players as they endeavour to trim their wage bill. However, Thauvin’s departure would be based more on his behaviour and attitude, rather than his wage demands.
When Marseille signed Thauvin from Lille for €15 million, he was supposed to become the young star of OM’s team, but it hasn’t quite happened at the Stade Velodrome.
This season Thauvin has only scored five times and contributed three assists. This is down on the eight goals he scored last season. In his second campaign with OM, the numbers are down and his performances have not been there to back it up.
Although Marcelo Bielsa has kept Thauvin as his “darling” this season, the crown is beginning to slip.
Marseille president, Vincent Labrune, has apparently grown tired of his antics. Thauvin fell out with Dimitri Payet in February while away at Rennes and then his tantrum and kicking of the bottle against Bordeaux in April showed his petulant side.
Labrune believes that the younger players have been bought to sell on, and Thauvin’s time has potentially come this summer.
It was suggested that Marseille turned down an approach from Spurs in the winter. It might not be the same this summer if they come calling again.
