Aymeric Laporte has teamed up with Jorge Mendes, fuelling speculation that he could be on the move this summer.
On the back of interest from Manchester City, Chelsea - per the Express - and a whole host of top European clubs, Aymeric Laporte is one of the most sought-after names in football, and it looks like he has taken steps towards making sure that he gets the best possible deal in the future.
Bilbao have shown great faith in the defender, with four new contracts signed in the last 18 months – the last of which is due to run until 2018 and has a release clause of €42 million (as reported by the Guardian).
Laporte’s stock has never been higher. He is the captain of France’s Under-21 side and has made 27 starts for his club this season. Bilbao are currently eighth in La Liga and nine points behind Villarreal in sixth, so European football looks to be out of the question.
This could be what sparks Laporte’s summer move away from the Basque region. Although he is regarded as one of the best young defenders in Europe, he still hasn’t played a part in Didier Deschamps’ senior France side.
Moving to one of the bigger clubs, and featuring in the Champions League, would do him no harm next season. Some players are reluctant to move so they don’t lose their place in the squad, but Laporte has nothing to lose.
Jorge Mendes represents the likes of Cristiano Ronaldo, Angel Di Maria and James Rodriguez and with the agent on board, you know that a transfer deal is never far away.
However, with Mendes in his corner, you know that the club and the player are going to get the best possible deal available to them. Chelsea and Manchester City may need to up their game if they are serious about a move for Laporte.
