Brendan Rodgers told Liverpoolfc.com that Jon Flanagan is back in training, working on his fitness, and could still play a part before the season ends.
The under-pressure 42-year-old said in his pre-match press conference for the trip to West Bromwich Albion that he doesn’t expect the England international to play this weekend but will monitor his progress in the hope that he can make an appearance before the campaign comes to a close.
‘’Jon Flanagan is now training with the team,’’ said Rodgers. ‘’Obviously he’s way off fitness, but we just need to monitor his rehabilitation and we’ll see how he is for the coming games.’’
The 22-year-old played a big part in Liverpool’s success last year and was even compared to Cafu by the Brazilian himself, as reported on Liverpoolfc.com.
This season, however, has been a completely different story for the youngster and with six Premier League games remaining he faces a race against time to make his first appearance of the 2014-15 campaign.
Should Liverpool fans expect to see Flanagan again this season?
Although he is back in training, as Rodgers mentioned, he is still way short of match fitness and with only a little more than a month remaining of the season, it seems reasonable to expect that any setback in his fitness now would officially end his campaign.
Nevertheless, if he does return, it will hopefully be the start of a big pre-season for the youngster as he will want to cement his place in the Reds side on a regular basis.
Rodgers has had an unsettled back line for much of the season, having tried several formations, and will no doubt be glad to see the defender at full fitness.
Andre Wisdom will also return from his loan spell at West Bromwich Albion at the end of the season, so the former Swansea boss could have a welcome selection headache.
