Report: Newcastle United to make Daryl Janmaat captain to fend off interest from Manchester United, Liverpool and Southampton

Chelsea Penalty v Newcastle

Manchester United, Liverpool and Southampton are reportedly interested in Newcastle United defender Daryl Janmaat.

Newcastle United will offer Daryl Janmaat the role of captaincy for next season in order to stop him from leaving in the summer transfer window, according to The Chronicle.

The report claims that the 25-year-old right-back is wanted by as many as three Premier League clubs, but the Magpies are not planning to sell him.

Manchester United, Liverpool and Southampton are all reported to be interested in Janmaat (as per The Chronicle), who joined Newcastle from Dutch giants Feyenoord in the summer of 2014.

In order to keep hold of the Netherlands international, claims The Chronicle, Newcastle are planning to promote him to either captain or vice-captain next season.

Would it work?

While becoming the captain of as big a club as Newcastle is a massive honour, the lure of playing for United or Liverpool could be too much to resist.

While United are one of the biggest clubs in the world and look set to return to the Champions League next season, Brendan Rodgers’s Liverpool are a team who will be looking to challenge for a top-four finish in the Premier League.
