Michael Owen has compared Liverpool striker Mario Balotelli to former Tottenham Hotspur star Dimitar Berbatov on BT Sport.
The former Manchester United and Newcastle United ace rates Balotelli highly, but he does not believe that he suits the current Liverpool team because of his lack of work ethic.
“He is a very good player,” former Liverpool striker Owen said on BT Sport’s Football Tonight show on Monday. “I just think with Balotelli - we all think the same thing - he doesn’t fit in.
“We watched Liverpool last year: they were red arrows, weren’t they? They were just coming at you from all angles with energy, pace, everything.
“Ballotelli is not that type of player, he is more of a Berbatov-type of player. He doesn’t put a lot of effort into his game. He is a classy player, he just doesn’t suit this Liverpool team.”
Owen does have a point about Balotelli and former United striker Berbatov being similar about their effort, or lack of it.
However, the comparison should stop there, mainly because the former Manchester City star is simply not as good as the Bulgarian.
Balotelli has been a big disappointment this season and has been exposed as a largely average striker who can at times step up his game.
The Italy international’s off-pitch issues during his time at City masked that, but with him having been relatively out of problems at Liverpool, his footballing side has come into more focus.
Berbatov may not have been an energetic player during his time at Tottenham and United, but his touch was class and his vision was exemplary.
