Liverpool have confirmed that their vice-captain Jordan Henderson has signed a new long-term contract with the club, with reports earlier in the week suggesting a £100,000 per week deal for five years for the midfielder widely tipped to take over the club captaincy from Steven Gerrard.
Having signed for £16 million (per the Daily Mail) from Sunderland in 2011 and struggled during his first season at the club, Henderson has been impressive over the past couple of seasons and managed to become one of the first names on the Liverpool teamsheet.
He told the Liverpool website of his delight at signing a new deal, saying: "I'm over the moon that it's finally done.
"There has been talk about it for a while now. It's brilliant news for me to commit my future to this football club - I really feel that it's a good time for us to look forward to the future, with the squad we've got, the manager, the size of the club and the fans we've got. I really think, over the next few years, we can challenge and start winning trophies."
The reaction among Liverpool fans on Twitter seems to be positive. Some may question the wages on offer, but after a period where there has been plenty of rumour surrounding the contracts of players, it is perhaps something of a relief for Liverpool fans to see some tangible progress on that front with Henderson committing his future to the club.

I like Henderson but don't think he's worth his new wage, nor do i see him as a great captain, hopefully he'll continue to develop into one— Big Sami (@BigSami18) April 23, 2015
Whether Henderson becomes captain or not, at the moment he is a vital player and it's brilliant news to keep him at the club. Top player.— Liverpool GFN (@LiverpoolGFN) April 23, 2015
