Colin Cooper picks his Championship top two

Derby County Huddle

Former Nottingham Forest defender Colin Cooper predicts Bournemouth, Middlesbrough and Watford to get promoted from the Championship this season.

Former Nottingham Forest defender Colin Cooper has predicted on Skysports.com that Bournemouth and Middlesbrough will finish in the top two of the Championship this season.

The 48-year-old former Middlesbrough star has also backed Watford to reach the playoff final and win it.

“Bournemouth are the best team in the division without a shadow of a doubt,” Cooper wrote on Skysports.com. “They are the best footballing team, play the most expansive football and that’s what gets them promoted.”

While Cooper has claimed that Middlesbrough will finish second as they “have enough in there, just”, he has dismissed Derby County's chances of winning the playoffs due to their poor form in recent weeks.

“The play-offs is all about mental ability,” the former Millwall man wrote on Skysports.com. “Norwich and Watford are to two strongest teams that will be in there.

“Derby score a lot of goals, but they have been on a huge wobble of late. Having seen plenty of Watford of late, I think they will win the play-offs.

Promotion race

As things stand at the moment, Watford and Bournemouth are the two sides in the automatic promotion spots.

While the Hornets are on 85 points from 44 matches, the Cherries are a point behind them in second with Middlesbrough level on points with them in third.

This weekend’s round of matches will be crucial in deciding the top two, and it will be interesting to see how the top three teams fare.

Derby need a win from their final two matches to clinch a playoff spot, and although their form over recent weeks has been less than perfect, they do have a team who can win the playoff final.

The playoffs will be decided by who the better team is on the day, and the Rams can certainly step up when need to.
