The former Tottenham Hotspur midfielder has proven to be one of Madrid’s key players this season, putting in a number of fabulous performances.
Yet, his influence on the side is better documented during his absence, as Madrid suffered a run of terrible results coinciding with Modric’s spell on the sidelines earlier in the season.
His recent return to the first-team has sparked a four-game winning run in La Liga, including a frankly ridiculous 9-1 thrashing of minnows Granada in which Cristiano Ronaldo helped himself to five goals.
However, Los Blancos’ bad luck with injuries struck once again at the weekend as Modric came off second best in a tackle during a meeting with Malaga, resulting in the Croatia international suffering an unfortunate knee ligament strain.
An initial prognosis suggested that he would be out for six weeks, and that has since been confirmed by Marca who have published an online poll asking whether Madrid can now kiss the title goodbye.
The former Spurs hero’s popularity in Madrid is displayed for all to see by the ensuing poll results – 57% from over 5,500 participants stating that the title race is over.
With six fixtures remaining, Carlo Ancelotti’s side only trail leaders Barcelona by two points and the Catalans still have trips to Espanyol and Atletico Madrid to take in.
However, the Madrid supporters are clearly not confident of winning all of their remaining games without Modric and judging by their previous form in his absence, it’s not at all that surprising.
