The Atletico Madrid man was speaking ahead of his side’s Champions League clash with Real Madrid, sharing a moment of regret with reporters that his former teammate will end his final season at Anfield trophy-less.
The Reds were beaten in last weekend’s FA Cup semi-final by Aston Villa, meaning the former England captain will end his 17-year affiliation with the Anfield club in rather limp circumstances.
Nevertheless, his ability and influence on the side during his Reds career is undisputable, prompting Torres to label his former skipper the best player he has ever played with.
“Out of all the great players I have played with, Gerrard, for me, is the best. But he is more than that - he is a good friend who, as a captain, is always there for his players,” Torres explained.
“I know what Liverpool means to him, so yes I would have loved to see my friend finish his final season with a trophy, but it was not to be.”
Torres has played with a number of world class players in his caree,r such as Frank Lampard and Didier Drogba at Stamford Bridge plus Andreas Iniesta, David Villa and Xaxi with the Spanish national team.
Still, Gerrard is somewhat unique in the loyalty he has shown on Merseyside, even during his side’s underachieving days and against the advances of the Blues during Jose Mourinho’s first stint as boss.
The 34-year-old has helped his side win two FA Cups, three League Cups, two European Super Cups and that famous Champions League success in 2005.
