Tottenham's Marcus Edwards, previously praised by Tim Sherwood, makes England under-17 squad

Tottenham Hotspur's Marcus Edwards has made the England under-17 squad for this summer's tournament.

Tottenham teenager Marcus Edwards has been included in England's under-17 squad this summer, as listed by the FA's website.

Edwards just turned 16 in December, and will attempt to lead the Young Lions to defend the European Championship which they won last summer.

The attacking midfielder is highly regarded, so much so that current Aston Villa boss Tim Sherwood even singled him out for praise in a newspaper column for The Independent last year.

The former Spurs head coach was glowing in his assessment of Edwards, and clearly has high hopes for him.

He said at the time: "He is the kind of player who, as a coach, makes you look forward to walking out on to that pitch in the morning. Everyone in development football has heard of Marcus. He is a gifted technician with a low centre of gravity, who can pass off either foot or dribble past opponents.

"When I was at Spurs, I would persuade anyone and everyone at the training ground to come over to see him train. He is a joy to watch. Again, he is the kind of player who might not always get a game.

"There might be a bigger boy who could be more effective on that given day, but in time Marcus has the potential to be a great player, a make-the-difference footballer. He can win you a game. These are the kind of talented players that we must not neglect."

Edwards featured in and scored in the qualifiers for England, and is likely to be a prominent part of the side aiming to again lift the trophy.

The tournament takes place in May and will be held in Bulgaria, with England scheduled to face Ireland, Holland and Italy in the group stages.

He is one of several highly rated young players in the Tottenham academy, with the under-18 side making the semi-finals of this year's Youth Cup.
