Nabil Bentaleb could have been forgiven for getting carried away with what has been a brilliant breakthrough season, but his comments on Tottenham Hotspur's official site prove that he has the attitude required to become a very special player.
Bentaleb is almost a unique talent in the Premier League. There are no other 20-year-olds who are required to marshall their team's midfield like the Algerian is at Tottenham and, yet, the youngster still doesn't feel satisfied with his season so far.
Bentaleb says that he has learned a lot from this season, but he has not got carried away with the praise which has been lavished on him from several sources.
Instead, the combative and composed central midfielder has clearly outlined the areas that he needs to work on and he knows that he is far from the finished article.
“To be honest, no. I need goals, assists and to be stronger in every part of my game," he responded, when asked whether he felt he had got everything he wanted out of this season. "I know I can do that. I can be better in my passing and my defending.
"It’s been a positive season because I’m improving, but I’m not at the level I want to be yet. If I want to get better, I know I can’t sleep on what I’ve done so far, I can’t stand still.
"The best players always want more, they push themselves all the time. I’m confident, I want to learn and the gaffer will help me progress. I’m only at the beginning and I can push further.”
Bentaleb has only managed to score once this season and it is an area that he should concentrate on developing in the future, but he can still feel very proud of his efforts.
The Algerian international has become the heartbeat of Tottenham's midfield, offering good protection to the defence and starting off attacking moves with his accurate passing, and he looks set to play a key role for the years ahead.
The Spurs academy graduate clearly has the ability to go right to the very top and, after his mature comments today, it seems that he has the attitude to match his skill.
