Tottenham fans debate whether Stambouli should stay or go

Tottenham Hotspur fans have had their say on the future of one of their most recent signings.

Tottenham Hotspur have a number of players who may soon be deemed surplus to requirements at White Hart Lane – players like Etienne Capoue, Younes Kaboul and Emmanuel Adebayor, who have struggled for both game-time and form under manager Mauricio Pochettino.

But one player who deserves more time is midfielder Benjamin Stambouli, who only arrived at Tottenham last summer in a £4.7million move from French side Montpellier.

In a recent report from the London Evening Standard, it was claimed Stambouli’s future was undecided, which prompted an article from HITC claiming the 24-year-old deserved more time to prove himself.

The article got plenty of comments, with the majority of Tottenham fans who had their say believing Stambouli should not be cast aside so soon.

The defensive midfielder is not the complete package by any means – his lack of pace has been noted on many occasions – but he does have what it takes to become a vital player for Tottenham, most specifically in the matches when his ability in front of the back-four should be utilised rather than ignored.

Below are a number of comments from Tottenham fans about a player they may have seen little of, but who they have seen enough of to know he deserves more time:

Rospur said: ‘He has shown great ability at times and he should have got more time purely as a sitting midfielder, that's where his strength lies. His pace is woeful and when playing in front of Vertonghen and Fazio there is a glaring problem. There were times this season when we needed his sort of player but the manager just doesn't seem to fancy him. Shame.’

George said: ‘He's the only one who can really tackle with bite!!’

C.O.Y.S. said: ‘This is why Pochettino shouldn't be manager, buying players and not playing them doesn't make sense. Stambouli may not have the pace but his defensive play is better than Mason and Bentaleb's who both I think are getting too much game time, especially Bentaleb. It's like we have Sherwood back at the club, give the lad a break now after the African Cup straight into the side again, no wonder we're conceding so many goals, it may not be down to the defence alone but whose playing in front of it.

Michael Mills said: ‘Let's stop playing "Russian Roulette" with the team. We need to stop buying players and not using them. In financial terms, Spurs cannot compete with the likes of Chelsea, Man City, Man Utd or Liverpool. That means Spurs do NOT have the luxury of merely buying players and not utilising them. Benjamin Stambouli was brought in by Pochettino, on the premise that he could not get Morgan Schneiderlin. Poch needs to make use of the player, as new acquisitions do not necessarily hit the ground running, during their maiden season. Benjamin is 24 and fits the youth policy that Spurs adhere to. Give him a chance for another season at least. If you turns out to be that bad, the club has a lifeline in next January's transfer window. However, given sufficient game time, Benjamin will prove Poch wrong.

For goodness sake Poch, do not sell Benjamin Stambouli and help a rival like Chelsea, get their man. Only do that if the intention is to actually secure Morgan Schneiderlin once and for all. Finally, Poch was brought in to help the younger players develop. Well, he has all summer to work with the midfielder to improve him. Besides, Poch should be more concerned about his defence, which is shambolic. COYS!!!!!!!!!!!!!’
