As Tottenham Hotspur prepare to face Southampton in the Premier League this weekend, fans of the North London club are likely to be keeping a close eye on a player manager Mauricio Pochettino knows very well – Morgan Schneiderlin.
There is no doubt the French international would be a great addition to Tottenham’s squad were they to ultimately sign him. But there is another Southampton player who would have arguably been an even better purchase for Tottenham – had they moved before Ronald Koeman did.
Tottenham need quality wingers and more fire-power to ease the burden on the prolific Harry Kane; and in Sadio Mane, they could have had both.
The Senegal international arrived at St Mary’s for £10million from Austrian side Red Bull Salzburg last summer, after scoring 45 goals and providing 32 assists in just 87 games.
He has since hit the ground running at Southampton, netting six goals, setting up an additional four and looking a constant threat with his pace and creativity.
Koeman has shown just how good he is in the transfer market and this is one player Tottenham are unlikely to ever get their hands on given his long-term contract at St Mary’s.
