The Anfield legend believes the midfield man is key to the club's future.
The midfielder is believed to be close to signing a new five-year deal with the club, according to Sky, after showing a remarkable improvement under boss Brendan Rodgers.
He initially struggled to settle at Anfield after joining from Sunderland in 2011 but has since proved to be a vital part of the Liverpool side, and Carragher in particular is pleased with the manner in which he has conducted himself as vice captain, especially in the absence of Steven Gerrard.
“I think he’s vitally important,” said Carragher.
“He’s a regular for England and without Steven Gerrard he’s taken on the role of the captaincy this season. The way he performs for Liverpool shows you the passion that he’s got.”
Despite impressing at Anfield under Rodgers, the England man is yet to be confirmed as the club’s next captain when Gerrard leaves.
The Liverpool legend is of course heading to America to join LA Galaxy, leaving a huge hole in the side and a huge amount of responsibility to boot. Henderson has somewhat filled that gap at times this year though, impressing when wearing the armband.
Carragher has been impressed, saying he would be very surprised if Henderson is not named as the new captain, especially given his excellent record when he has stood in this season.
“The manager has said it isn’t set in stone that he will get it next season but I’d be very surprised if he wasn’t,” he added.
“His record as captain is very good and he’s a player who has grown into playing for Liverpool after a difficult start.”
