Able to play on the wing or as a number 10, Defrel, 23, has netted six goals and registered four assists in 27 games for Serie A strugglers Cesena.
His form has done enough to pique the interest of the two London-based Premier League clubs, and the early season interest could be followed through this summer with a formal approach.
Although turning out for Cesena, he is currently co-owned by that club as well as Parma, whose own future is up in the air. Any bid from an interested party would have to be accepted by both Italian clubs before talks could begin concerning contracts and the like, although the recent report has suggested that a move is likely.
In the TMW article, there are quotes from Defrel’s agent who confirms that the young attacker will certainly be leaving Cesena in the summer, with his future in doubt.
Translated by SportWitness, Defrel’s agent said: “We await the end of the season to see what will be the Parma, since the player is still in the middle between the ducal and Cesena, but it certainly will leave Cesena. He’s had important offers.”
With an exit from Cesena guaranteed, Spurs and West Ham have been given a boost in the race to sign Defrel, and Parma’s current situation makes any potential transfer even easier.
With the club in financial turmoil, player contracts may be voided at the end of the campaign to pay off creditors. This means Defrel would be available on a free transfer, and, even if his contract is not cancelled, Parma may still be forced to sell at a low price to ensure funds are being raised for the survival of the club.
