Former Arsenal man Ray Parlour questioned whether Memphis Depay would be able to progress effectively if he moved to Manchester United.

Former Arsenal star Ray Parlour explained on the Alan Brazil Sports Breakfast Show for talkSPORT what he sees as the key question for Memphis Depay if he joins Manchester United.

TalkSPORT reported comments from Netherlands legend Ronald de Boer where the Dutchman said the PSV winger has the characteristics of former United player Cristiano Ronaldo, but Parlour questioned whether the 21-year-old would have the same impact.

“It’s all well and good comparing him to Ronaldo but the question is; is he going to progress? Is he going to develop?” said Parlour.

The Daily Mirror has reported that Manchester United are leading the race to sign Depay from PSV in the Netherlands because of his relationship with the club’s current manager Louis van Gaal.

Van Gaal knows him well from the days when the pair worked together in the Netherland national setup and he could have a real impact with his pace and attacking style down one of United’s flanks.

LvG will have ideas over how he can develop and progress to become a better player, which he’d be able to implement at club level because he’d be working with him close to every day.

The Mirror also states that Liverpool are interested, which could give United a problem in the transfer market, but the Old Trafford side have the resources to cope if a bidding war starts to break out between the clubs.
