Depay, Hummels and more could mean an exciting summer for United

Manchester United have a number of top stars on their shortlist, and in an unusual occurrence for players of such quality, many of them may be attainable.

Manchester United are set for a summer of intense transfer speculation of the highest order, with a series of high profile targets seemingly becoming more available at their respective clubs.

There promises to be a series of high profile individuals once again attracted to joining one of the world's top clubs now they will be, as seems most likely, back in the Champions League.

One player the club is already said to be after, according to the Manchester Evening News, is PSV forward Memphis Depay, whose outstanding skills have helped his side to the Eredivisie title and the 21-year-old to the top of his country's scoring charts. Louis van Gaal is, of course, already familiar with the Dutch star he helped turn heads at the World Cup in Brazil last summer.

Key in this transfer window is Jurgen Klopp's decision to step down as manager of Borussia Dortmund. The Bundesliga giants have been one of the biggest underpeformers in their domestic league this season, but maintain a whole group of hugely talented players, many of whom have been key contributors to Germany's World Cup triumph. There are also several individuals who have reportedly been on United's radar at one time or another, and they may well suddenly be a lot more available than they were last season, and eager to leave a side losing their charismatic boss and unlikely to play in Europe's top competition next year.

United's alleged pursuit, as reported in the Mail, of Mats Hummels is one example of interest the club seem to have maintained over several seasons, with many seeing the 26-year-old central defender as one of the best in the world. If he were to sign at Old Trafford, fans would get the powerful and authoritative defensive lynchpin they've been missing since Nemanja Vidic and Rio Ferdinand's qualities started to wane.

But Van Gaal has also been keeping tabs on Ilkay Gundogan, again covered in the Mail, a quality midfielder with a superb passing range that could eventually replace Michael Carrick.

Then there is Marco Reus, the flying winger that Van Gaal would struggle to accommodate in his present system but who was still being linked by the Metro as recent as February.

The club will be well aware that if they were to sign more than one star from Dortmund then whoever comes in would likely settle in to the first team that much more quickly.

Coupled with a likely chase for either Gareth Bale or Cristiano Ronaldo, the summer promises to be a very exciting time for the Red Devils.
