The Brazilian international ended up signing for Al-Ahli despite links with Manchester United.
Several reports toward the end of last year linked Manchester United with a move for Cruzeiro playmaker Everton Ribeiro. He was also been linked with moves to Russia, China and Qatar - but he has admitted himself that the idea of playing for Manchester United is a dream. He was reported by Sky Sports as stating:
"I will continue doing my job here at Cruzeiro but plan on getting to a big club. It's a dream I've had since young, I've always liked Manchester United."
He was coming off the back of an incredible season for Cruzeiro in Brazil as they took the Campeonato Brasileiro title by storm. He won player f the year in Brazil that year, and did it again last term
But despite the continued links with Manchester United when he finally left Cruzeiro, Europe was not his destination.
Instead, he headed to the United Arab Emirates. He joined Al-Ahli in a money spinning deal back in February.
When he joined the club he told The National that Manchester United were keen on his signature:
“Yes, there have been offers both in this transfer window and the last one. We had offers and conversations with Manchester United, Monaco and Milan. But none of those offers could meet the expectations of my club Cruzeiro.
“The only offer that everyone was happy with, it was the Ahli offer and that’s why I am here. It was the only offer that came close to our expectations.”
Last night he scored in the Champions League, the AFC version, against Al Ahli of Saudi Arabia - in a game they lost 2-1.
So far Ribeiro has scored four goals in 16 games for Al Ahli, but considering he is playing in UAE it is fair to doubt he would have had an impact at Old Trafford.
