This weekend Arsenal welcome Chelsea to the Emirates Stadium for a huge clash that could decide the destination of the Premier League title.
Jose Mourinho’s side are currently 10 points clear at the top of the table, but as their closest challengers, Arsenal will want to make a dent in that lead if at all possible.
The two defensive midfielders have been key for their respective sides this season and it will be interesting to see who comes out on top on Sunday.
In the build-up to that match we have taken a closer look at how the two players compare in the league to date.
The Chelsea star has the better passing accuracy (86 per cent compared with Coquelin’s 83 per cent) and he also averages more key passes per match than the Gunners man.
But Arsenal’s breakout star is ahead in many other key areas, including outfield blocks, tackles, effective clearances (both with his feet and with his head), duels and interceptions.
In short, Coquelin has better average stats in most of the key areas in which a defensive midfielder is judged.
That will count for little on Sunday, when both players will know it comes down to just a single performance. But Arsenal fans should be proud of Coquelin’s emergence, as he looks to challenge one of the best in the business in the form of Matic.
