Arsenal missed out on a reported summer transfer target yesterday, but supporters did not seem too upset about it.
Manchester United announced on their official website that Chris Smalling has signed a long-term deal with the club until 2019.
The centre-back has answered many of his critics in recent weeks with a series of impressive performances during the side's winning run. It was only earlier this season the defender was widely lambasted after being sent off against Manchester City.
Smalling has been consistently linked with Arsenal over the past 12 months, with The Telegraph reporting at the end of March the defender was to be the subject of a £12 million summer bid.
The England international's new deal puts and end to talk he could move on, and gives him a chance to solidify his claim for a regular starting spot at United. He is likely to be tested strongly next season with United also expected to sign a new centre-back this summer.
The switch to Arsenal would have left him no clearer though, with Gabriel Paulista already battling Per Mertesacker and Laurent Koscielny for a spot.
