Sunderland will be in the transfer market looking to strengthen one key position this summer.
As per a report in the Shields Gazette, Sunderland will be looking to sign one central defender in the summer transfer window, and they have identified a main target to approach.
Wes Brown is out of contract at the end of this season, whilst Sebastian Coates will be returning to Liverpool at the expiration of his loan deal.
John O'Shea is 33-years-old and looks to have age finally catching up with him, and Santiago Vergini, whose loan deal also expires at the end of this season, will unlikely be deserving a permanent transfer to the Stadium of Light.
This has led the Black Cats to identify the central defensive position as their priority to strengthen in the summer, and the report reveals that they will sign at least one centre-half.
Their main transfer target is also named in the report, being a defender who has been linked with the club in the past.
Liverpool’s 22-year-old Tiago Ilori has been referenced by a Sunderland Echo report in the past, and the Gazette report claims that the Black Cats are continuing to track his progress during his loan deal with Bordeaux, before he returns to Anfield this summer.
The youngster has been awarded few chances under Brendan Rodgers, and Sunderland may be tempted to go all out to sign the promising Portuguese youth international, or only take him on a loan deal.
