Report: Derby given clear message if they want to keep McClaren

Steve McClaren

Derby County now know exactly what has to happen if they want to retain Steve McClaren as their manager.

The Daily Star has reported that if Derby County want to retain Steve McClaren as their manager, they have to win promotion into the Premier League.

The paper claims it’s the sticking point, which has already prevented Newcastle United from working out a deal with the former England boss for him to take over at St James’ Park, replacing John Carver for next season.

Derby are looking good in their pursuit of a play-off place in the Championship, as they look to overturn the heartbreak of losing in the final last season against Queens Park Rangers.

Derby would prefer to go up automatically, which would remove the lottery of the play-off system, but they couldn’t halt a recent blip in form which arrived due to injuries and caused them to fall off the pace at the top of the table.

It’s understandable why Newcastle are going after McClaren according to the paper, but there is a very good chance that he will still be the main man at Derby for next season with a clear aim and focus heading into the summer.
