In order to close that gap, manager Arsene Wenger will need to bring in reinforcements this summer, continuing from the arrivals of Mesut Ozil and Alexis Sanchez in recent summer transfer windows.
However, The Mirror believe that Wenger is now going off the idea of targeting Southampton star Schneiderlin - because of the performances of Francis Coquelin.
Schneiderlin, 25, is one of the Premier League's top midfield players, having built a strong reputation during his time with the Saints.
Yet with aspirations of playing in the Champions League, Schneiderlin is expected to leave St. Mary's Stadium this summer - but now, Arsenal may be out of the race for his signature.
His compatriot Coquelin has played in the defensive midfield role for Arsenal for around half of the season, and his superb displays allegedly mean that Wenger will instead look to other areas of his team to strengthen.
It would still be little surprise to see Schneiderlin eventually arrive at the Emirates Stadium, but it seems that the Gunners are at least reconsidering a move to sign the former Strasbourg man.
