Michael Owen downplays Mesut Ozil's assist but concedes he is a very good player

Ozil To Take Corner

Owen also comments on Arsenal's recent success.

Former Liverpool striker Michael Owen through gritted teeth paid Arsenal star Mesut Ozil a compliment on BT Sport on Monday evening.

The co-commentator and pundit has been a fierce critic of the Gunners star since he signed for the north London side in 2013, recently banging the drum that Liverpool prospect Raheem Sterling is already a better player.

Ozil lit up the FA Cup semi-final at the weekend, supplying Alexis Sanchez for his two strikes in the 2-1 win at Wembley.

Owen was asked if he still stuck by his Sterling comments, and responded accordingly.

He said: "Yes of course I do. That second goal will go down as an Ozil assist won't it, but it was all to do with Sanchez."

Owen did go onto make a rare admission, adding: "He is a very good player."

Arsenal are really seeing the very best of Ozil in recent weeks, with the German international in his best spell of form since joining the club from Real Madrid.

Owen now expects the Gunners to go on and beat Aston Villa, and says ultimately 2014/15 will end up being a success for the club.

He added: "Only a few months ago we were talking about would they get in top four? Knocked out of the Champions League, now they may win the FA cup and come second in the league and that will be a decent season for Arsenal."

Owen told TalkSport last summer he expected Arsenal to finish outside the top four in 2014/15.
