Grading Liverpool's summer signings: the final verdict

The final verdict on a very poor summer of recruitment from the Premier League side.

Adam Lallana: D

The big-money summer signing started well at Anfield but has gone the way of so many others in recent weeks. Lallana's biggest problem is a lack of fitness and strength but that simply isn't good enough considering the money the club paid for him.

Alberto Moreno: D+

It may sound harsh but the Spaniard failed to deliver when it mattered most. At the start of the season, Moreno's breakthrough at Anfield earned him an A. With time, he slipped to a B. But, at Liverpool Football Club, what counts is how you perform in the very biggest of games. Like most of his team-mates, Moreno simply went missing on the important occasions.

Dejan Lovren: D-

Another miss. Initially given a C then an E, the Liverpool defender will have to settle for a D-. Another man not performing anywhere near his pricetag and, ironically, his best contribution of the season was his penalty miss against Besiktas: because at least he showed the guts to take one - unlike many of his side's forwards.

Emre Can: B+

One of only two summer signings to remain with a constant grading. The 21-year-old clearly has a bright future and has performed well for the Reds this season. He just needs to iron out a few flaws in his game.

Javier Manquillo: D

Another D, Manquillo started at a B, went to a C and then fell further. He has simply been absent lately, overlooked by Brendan Rodgers, and, considering the struggles of the rest of the Liverpool squad, that's quite a telling sign.

Lazar Markovic: D+

Has really fluctuated this season, from a terrible start to the campaign, to a more promising middle period. Now that his first season at Anfield is nearing a close, though, the fact is Liverpool have bought another big-money player who has floundered on big occasions, failed to break his way into any of the side's systems and scored just two Premier League goals for the club.

Mario Balotelli: E

Intriguingly, the Italian improves from an F last time out - because he has shown signs of life and did score a legitimate goal against Aston Villa in the FA Cup that was ruled out incorrectly. Balotelli should still be sold as soon as possible, however, if there are any willing buyers - as his awful attitude will continue to hold Liverpool back.

Rickie Lambert: C

The second consistent fixture at the same grade: Lambert has underwhelmed on Merseyside but, at the end of the day, the fault with buying him isn't his. In a system that suited him like it did at Southampton, the 33-year-old could still have contributed several goals to Liverpool's season. In the event, however, the striker just did what he could when rarely used after a very pointless decision indeed to sign him.
