De Boer: What Depay knows if he signs for Manchester United

Ronald de Boer explained why Manchester United could have the edge in the race to sign Memphis Depay.

Ajax coach Ronald de Boer suggested on the Alan Brazil Sports Breakfast Show for talkSPORT that Manchester United could have the advantage in the race to sign Memphis Depay from PSV Eindhoven.

The Guardian has reported that United are in a duel against Liverpool to sign the talented Dutch winger, but de Boer suggested that Depay would know exactly what he’s getting if he moves to United.

“If he goes to United then he knows what he’s getting with Louis van Gaal who worked well with him during the World Cup,” said de Boer.

Depay would be moving to a new league if he chose a move to England and it’s significant for foreign players joining the Premier League that they feel comfortable.

Van Gaal knows the best system and the best way to get the most out of Depay and he knows that the manager would use him in the right way.

That comfort in terms of mentality will improve his ability to settle more effectively and although Liverpool have merit as an appealing club, it could tip the balance between the two.

United also arguably represent the better prospect of Champions League football for next season, which will be an important factor in the decision he makes if he does choose to leave PSV.

It will be interesting to see how the situation pans out, but De Boer clearly feels United have the edge.
