One of Manchester United's players has reacted following his new contract.
The England international’s previous deal was due to expire next summer, but as reported by the BBC, he has now committed to United until 2019.
The 25-year-old has featured 24 times this season and has started six of the club’s last seven league games, which have seen them climb tantalisingly close to a top-four finish despite their recent defeat to Chelsea.
Following the news, Smalling took to social media to write, “Proud and honoured to sign a new deal at the club. This is an exciting time for everyone at United.”
Manager Louis van Gaal took time to instil his ethos on the team but that is now paying off in fine style, with United recently defeating Tottenham Hotspur, Liverpool and Manchester City to shake things up at the top of the table.
That defeat to Chelsea means there is still plenty of work to do to ensure Champions League football next season, but United should have enough to do that, with Smalling set to play a vital role.
