Former Chelsea defender with chance of redemption on Tuesday

David Luiz is set to start for PSG on Tuesday and needs to show just how good a defender he can be in the Champions League.

Former Chelsea defender David Luiz was the subject of countless jokes after Paris Saint-Germain lost 3-1 to Barcelona at the Parc des Princes. On Tuesday night the Brazilian defender has a chance at redemption as he is set to play at the Camp Nou.

It was a shock when David Luiz was named in the squad for the first leg. Injured against Marseille, it was expected that he would miss at least four weeks with a thigh strain.

When Thiago Silva was injured in the first half, it forced Laurent Blanc’s hand and Luiz had to play over 70 minutes in Paris. He wasn’t ready for that sort of challenge, and it was clear to see from his performance.

On Saturday the Brazilian played against Nice in Ligue 1 as PSG prevailed 3-1. The defence of Luiz after the Barcelona game was based on the fact he wasn’t match-fit, but it is hard to back-up when he plays 90 minutes just three days later.

Nice are not at the same level as Barcelona, but after missing training on the Friday, it seems strange that he be match ready 24 hours later.

For David Luiz, Tuesday night is one of his most important games in a PSG shirt. He needs to put in a performance that shows he can play against a team of Barcelona’s quality and not be embarrassed again.

If Barcelona steamroll past the Ligue 1 champions again, it will give the French side food for thought and doubts on just how far away they are from European success.
