Report: Newcastle linked with £4 million move for ex-Sunderland winger James McClean

The 25-year-old winger is currently plying his trade with Championship side Wigan.

According to a report in the Sunderland Echo, McClean is a keen transfer target for Newcastle, who are preparing to make a £4 million swoop for him in the summer transfer window.

Currently playing with Wigan in the Championship, McClean has made 35 appearances this term, netting six goals and registering a further seven assists.

He joined the Latics in the summer of 2013, leaving Newcastle’s North East rivals Sunderland after making 70 appearances for the Black Cats.

He has so far made 84 appearances for Wigan, and has been the one real shining light in their season - a season that looks likely to end in relegation to League One. With just two games of the season left, the former FA Cup winners are five points off safety, and it is likely that they will dropping down to the third tier.

In such a situation it would come as no surprise to see a host of their best players leave the club, and McClean could be first out the door if Newcastle are serious about their £4 million offer.

The Irish international winger has proven himself in the Premier League before, and there is no doubting his quality. At the age of 25 he still has his best years ahead of him, and Newcastle would be making a good move if they could secure McClean following Wigan’s relegation.
