Manchester United legend says 19-year-old still has a lot to learn

Denis Irwin believes that Luke Shaw has a big future at Manchester United.

Manchester United legend Denis Irwin has backed Luke Shaw to have a big future at Old Trafford on, but he believes that the youngster still has a lot to learn.

Shaw, who started against Chelsea at the weekend, has not had the start to life in Manchester that he would have liked, and a number of supporters and critics have gone on to question his ability.

After two fantastic years with Southampton, it’s incredibly harsh to suggest that he will struggle to create a legacy at United, and he has now been backed by one of United’s defensive greats in Irwin.

‘’Luke Shaw has had a stop-start season because he’s had a lot of injuries,’’ claimed Irwin. ‘’I think he just needs a run of games to get up and running.

‘’Shaw’s got competition for his place now but he knew that would be the case anyway when he came here.

"He's got a challenge in front of him but he's only a young lad. And while he’s not had the season he would have liked because of those injuries, he'll still learn an awful lot.’’

How big can Luke Shaw be for United in the future?

Like Irwin suggests, it’s not been a straightforward season for the youngster, and after being hyped up to be the next Ashley Cole prior to the World Cup, it’s no surprise that the expectation has eventually caught up with him.

At 19, even the most talented of youngsters are either sent out on loan to sides in lower divisions or used very sparingly in the first team. However, Shaw is expected to be much more than that due to his reputation.

Although he hasn’t stepped up to the plate as much as some would have hoped, he has shown a lot of promise and it wouldn’t be a surprise to see an almost completely different prospect this time next season.

The experience gained from his first year at Old Trafford could ultimately play a huge part in his development, as it has allowed him to see what it is like to be put under the microscope of playing for such a big club.
