Lineker-like Kane breaks 23-year-old Spurs record with 30th of season

The Spurs forward could likely already claim legendary status at his boyhood club, after joining Gary Lineker at the top of the Tottenham scoring charts.

Tottenham star Harry Kane reached a new set of milestones with his late goal against Newcastle on Sunday, and quite a notable selection it is too, being the first player to score 30 times in one season in twenty-three years.

It also means he is only the third player to score 30 goals since club legend Martin Chivers managed 33 in the 1972-73 season, and the first ever in a Premier League season.

Clive Allen managed the phenomenal total of 49 goals in the 1986-87 season, the highest ever total by a Spurs player in a single campaign, while Gary Lineker hit 35 in 1991-92, the last time someone at White Hart Lane broke the 30-goal barrier.

But Lineker's total came in the final old Division One season, and no one has managed 30 strikes in the Premier League era until Kane.

It isn't just the 30 goal grand total that is noteworthy though, Kane also has 20 goals in the league alone - meaning he joins an illustrious list of the likes of Teddy Sheringham, Jurgen Klinsmann, and Gareth Bale by scoring 20 or more in a Premier League league campaign, and the youngest player to do it to boot.

Kane will now likely be aiming for the England great and Match of the Day host's total of 35, with five games remaining of the Premier League season.

And he needs one more to draw level with Sheringham, Klinsmann and Bale, all of whom scored 21 times in the league alone.

However, what makes the 21-year-old's exploits even more impressive is that Lineker's, and the likes of Allen and Chivers, all played in an extended league campaign with 42 games in a season.

This, coupled with the fact Kane has only made 23 starts in the league this season, suggest an emphatic goalscoring record that deserves its place as one of the greatest in recent Tottenham history.
