Former England defender Jamie Carragher suggested Tottenham Hotspur miss Jan Vertonghen because other defenders haven't been able to step up.
Former Liverpool and England defender Jamie Carragher suggested on Sky Sports yesterday that Tottenham Hotspur lack something in terms of the quality of their defenders.
Carragher suggested that Mauricio Pochettino’s side had missed the leadership qualities of Jan Vertonghen, selecting two players he feels have underperformed for the club.
“I just don’t think they have very good defenders. In Fazio and Dier, who’s a young player, I think they have struggled,” said Carragher.
“Vertonghen coming back as the captain will help them. I think they have missed him in recent weeks.
The defence is definitely an area where Tottenham have struggled, with the attack weighing in time and time again to get the side out of trouble.
No other side in the Premier League’s top 13 has conceded more goals than Tottenham this season and Pochettino is going to have his work cut out to improve the quality across his backline over the course of the summer.
It’s key to remember that both Fazio and Dier are yet to complete full seasons in the Premier League at a big Premier League side, but they will benefit from the experience they have accumulated.
The big challenge for Pochettino could be keeping Vertonghen at the club because he’s the sort of top quality player that a Champions League side could be interested in during the summer.
With Tottenham unlikely to be able to offer that competition, it’s going to be a factor in the Belgian’s thinking along with any other player linked with a move away from White Hart Lane.
