The teenager had missed United’s last six Premier League matches but he returned at Stamford Bridge and played arguably his best match of the season.
If he can stay fit, there is no reason Shaw cannot become one of United’s best ever full-backs but he has a long way to go and he knows he has to impress van Gaal week in, week out both on the training field and on the pitch.
Speaking about the need to always give 100 per cent, the United full-back said, “If you don’t give that, he won’t play you and that is what he is like.”
It means all United’s stars know they will always be on their toes and it is why many of the club’s expensive additions have had to make do with spells on the bench at various times in the campaign.
Angel Di Maria is the latest player consigned to a bit-part role, but previously the likes of Ander Herrera and Radamel Falcao have also been used sparingly.
Shaw himself – who signed for United for £31million from Southampton last summer – knows all too well the need to be at your very best at Old Trafford, having made only 15 appearances this season.
But after his latest showing, there is every chance he will kick on from here.
