Former Liverpool and Villa goalkeeper James made the revelation on BT Sport just before the game kicked off at London’s Wembley Stadium.
“He (Agbonlahor) said that they would win 3-0,” said the 44-year-old. “Benteke and Delph the scorers. Didn’t say 2-0.”
As it happened, winger Agbonlahor, who missed the tie due to a hamstring injury, got his prediction right... well, almost right.
While Christian Benteke and Fabian Delph both scored in the semi-final clash, the final score was 2-1 to Villa, not 3-0 as the 28-year-old had predicted.
Brazil international playmaker Philippe Coutinho put Liverpool in the lead on the half-hour mark, but Benteke restored parity in the 36th minute and Delph scored what proved to be the winning goal in the opening minutes of the second period.
The fact that Agbonlahor was so confident of winning against Liverpool highlights the impact manager Tim Sherwood has made on the team.
Villa are a rejuvenated side under the former Tottenham Hotspur manager, and their win against Liverpool on Sunday was fully deserved.
