Valon Behrami conceded a penalty and got sent off for Hamburg on his birthday.

Bundesliga club Hamburg were dealt a huge blow on Sunday as they try and save the club from relegation. Close to securing a vital away point against Werder Bremen, former West Ham United midfielder Valon Behrami conceded the vital penalty that saw them lose 1-0, and leaves them rooted to the bottom of the table.

The former West Ham man brought down Zlatko Junuzovic with just eight minutes remaining, receiving his marching orders, and former Wigan and Chelsea forward Franco Di Santo stepped up to covert the spot-kick.

The Swiss star is already facing disciplinary action after a dressing room fight with Johan Djourou after a 2-0 defeat to Wolfsburg.

To make things worse, Behrami was celebrating his 30th birthday, perhaps he couldn’t wait to get stuck into some birthday cake and decided to take an early bath. It is no laughing matter for Hamburg though.

After 29 games they are bottom of the league on 25 points, with Hannover four points ahead in 15th place. Their rivals had lost 4-0 to Bayer Leverkusen on Saturday afternoon, making the chance of a point even more important this weekend.

Three of their five remaining matches are against sides in the top half, but the games against Stuttgart in 17th and Freiburg in 14th will be the deciders.

Behrami spent three years in London, making 63 appearances from the Hammers, but his sole season in Hamburg is looking like it may have an unhappy ending and has definitely given him a birthday he won’t forget in a hurry.
