Tottenham round-up: Early team news and Pochettino on summer plans

A select round-up of the latest news relating to Tottenham Hotspur

Tottenham Hotspur travel to St James’ Park today to take on Newcastle United.

Mauricio Pochettino’s side are currently seventh in the Premier League while the Magpies are 14th, a full 19 points behind today’s opponents.

In early team news, the BBC reports that Tottenham will assess the fitness of both goalkeeper Hugo Lloris and right-back Kyle Walker ahead of the game, with the duo recovering from knee and foot injuries respectively.

Jan Vertonghen is hoping to recover from illness while the report claims some unnamed players could also be assessed shortly before kick-off.

In other news, Pochettino has been speaking to the Daily Star about his plans for the close-season – a time when he will be hoping to effectively build on the talented squad he already has at his disposal.

While a top-four finish appears beyond them this year, he already has his eye on that goal 12 months down the line.

“For next season we need to build a squad to try to fight for the top four,” the Tottenham boss said. “But we have got to be realistic about this season.”
