Thierry Henry: If it wasn't for his injury, Christian Benteke would not be at Aston Villa

Arsenal legend Thierry Henry believes Aston Villa are fortunate to have Christian Benteke at their disposal.

Former Arsenal striker Thierry Henry has told The Sun that Aston Villa are fortunate to still have star striker Christian Benteke.

The club's top goalscorer netted his most important goal for the club yet at the weekend, a equaliser in the FA Cup final against Liverpool.

His side went onto win the game 2-1, but it could have been different had he not been in the right place at the right time to ensure Villa went into half-time level.

Henry believes the recently rejuvenated striker would not be at the club had it not been for his injuries last season.

He said: "Had he not suffered his injury last year, I am sure he would have ended up going to another club after the World Cup.

"At the moment, everything the Belgian touches turns to goals."

That would of course have depended on two scenarios. Benteke would have had to hit form leading up to and at the World Cup, and Aston Villa would have needed to be convinced to sell.

To assume Benteke would have earned a starting spot and excelled at the World Cup, is on Henry's part purely an assumption.

His 2013/14 season was, as it stands, his poorest of his Villa career to date in terms of goals per game with 10 in 26 appearances. There was also little momentum, on a downwards curve after an impressive debut season when he scored 19.

His competition for a starting place in the Belgian side consisted of Romelu Lukaku who netted 15 in the preceding season for Everton, and breakthrough star Divock Origi - who did go onto star at the tournament.

Whether a brief tournament upturn in form would have convinced Villa to cash in is immaterial now - for his current performances make him more important to the club than ever, and a must-keep.
