They've both since moved on but the bond remains, as Harper showed on Twitter by messaging Given after the now Aston Villa goalkeeper helped his side beat Liverpool in the FA Cup semi-final.
A vibrant and dynamic Aston Villa side eliminated the Reds at Wembley and booked another berth at the famous national stadium for the FA Cup final.
For Given, the story is extra special, with the veteran back in the Villa side after spending so long in Brad Guzan's shadow.
As such, the congratulations poured in on social media from his former team-mate at Newcastle.
@No1shaygiven Congratulations , absolutely buzzing for you to be back there after 17yrs. Happy 39th Birthday for tomorrow too !!— Stephen Harper (@steveharper37) April 19, 2015
Seventeen years is certainly a long time - and 39 a grand old age in football. Given and co deserve all the credit in the world for steering Aston Villa back to Wembley for a final.
It's a shame things aren't going so smoothly for their former club over at Newcastle, of course, although that's not quite for them to worry about anymore.
