Southampton may have taken the lead against Stoke City on Saturday through Morgan Schneiderlin, but Ronald Koeman’s side ultimately lost 2-1.
Goals from Mame Biram Diouf and Charlie Adam ensured the hosts took all three points and dented Southampton’s hopes of qualifying for Europe next season.
But while the goal-scorers stole the headlines, there was an interesting selection choice with Maya Yoshida starting at the back for Southampton while regular centre-back Toby Alderweireld lined up in midfield.
The Belgian international impressed further up the field, but he ultimately ended the day on a stretcher after landing awkwardly, leaving Southampton fans to wonder if that was the last they have seen of their loan star in a Saints shirt.
Further back, Yoshida impressed, making his 19th league appearance of the season and doing well in a centre-back pairing with the always impressive Jose Fonte.
After the match, we took to Twitter to see what Southampton fans thought of Yoshida’s performance and you can read a selection of what we found below:
one thing I will never ever understand is this; Why are we playing Yoshida when our back 4 is healthy and well?. I will never ever get that.— Thomas Levcovich (@TLevcovich) April 19, 2015
Can't believe some of our fans don't rate Yoshida. Been class this season. #SaintsFC— Ben McQuaide (@Ben_McQuaide97) April 18, 2015
