According to a report from the Daily Star, Manchester United manager Louis van Gaal is considering a move for Aston Villa striker Christian Benteke.
The Belgian international has recovered from injury to impress after a slow start, scoring eight goals in his last six Premier League appearances.
That kind of form cannot be ignored, certainly when United have relied predominantly on Wayne Rooney for goals from a forward position with Radamel Falcao struggling for form and Robin van Persie injured.
The Colombian loanee’s form since arriving from AS Monaco means a permanent switch to United is unlikely, while van Persie is another year older and has thus far failed to replicate the form of his debut campaign.
At just 24, and with plenty of Premier League experience, Benteke would be a sensible target, but with a contract until the summer of 2017 Villa would have no need – and certainly no desire – to sell him.
This summer is likely to be one of considerable change at both clubs, but could a player who on his day is one of the most deadly in the top flight really swap one side for another?
