Report: Southampton to battle Newcastle for signing of Charlie Austin

Southampton have reportedly joined the race to sign QPR striker Charlie Austin this summer.

According to the Daily Mirror, Southampton have joined Newcastle United in the race to sign Queens Park Rangers striker Charlie Austin.

Austin, 25, has had a meteoric rise in his career; from non-league sides like Kintbury Rangers, Hungerford Town, Thatcham Town and Poole Town to the Premier League in just six years.

After spells with Swindon Town and Burnley, Austin is now spearheading the Queens Park Rangers attack - and he hasn't let them down.

Austin has smashed 17 goals in 30 Premier League games this season, making him the division's fourth top scorer, behind only Harry Kane, Diego Costa and Sergio Aguero.

Yet with QPR struggling at the wrong end of the table, Austin could be available during the summer transfer window - especially with just 12 months left to run on his contract.

The Daily Mirror believe that Southampton are now interested in giving the former Poole Town striker a return to the South Coast, as manager Ronald Koeman looks to ease the goalscoring burden on Graziano Pelle's shoulders.

They aren't the only team considering a bid for Austin though, with Newcastle United also credited with an interest by The Mirror after enduring another poor season.

They believe that it will take a bid of around £10m to land Austin, regardless of whether QPR stay up or not - and that could spark a transfer battle between Newcastle and Southampton this summer.
