Tottenham Hotspur legend Gary Lineker has taken to social networking site Twitter to make fun of Arsenal defender Per Mertesacker’s lack of pace.

During tonight’s FA Cup semi-final tie between Reading and Arsenal at London’s Wembley Stadium, the former England international striker made the following post on Twitter:

Mertesacker is a World Cup winner with Germany and is not a bad defender, but he is not among the best centre-backs in the world either.

The 30-year-old has made some high-profile errors for Arsenal this season and has come in for some harsh criticisms.

As a matter of fact, with the signing of Gabriel Paulista in the January transfer window, the German is not guaranteed a place in the Gunners’ starting line-up week in and week out.

However, one needs to consider the fact that Mertesacker is now 30 years of age and is probably past his prime.

Moreover, given the fact that the Premier League is a fast league, players who are slow like Mertesacker tend to struggle with age.
