Former Arsenal forward Charlie Nicholas has told Sky Sports that Aston Villa will not suffer relegation from the Premier League at the end of the season.
Heading into this weekend’s round of matches in the English top flight, the Villans found themselves six points above the bottom three in 15th.
“I’d say both West Brom and Aston Villa are one win away from security, I really do feel that’s how close they are,” Nicholas told Sky Sports.
“Villa are still the great unpredictables but they’ve got Christian Benteke scoring goals at the moment, and that’s so important. This is a timing issue – Benteke has clicked into form at the right time – and for that reason Villa will be safe.”
Christian Benteke’s return to form has indeed come at a great time and has coincided with Villa appointing former Tottenham Hotspur boss Tim Sherwood as their manager.
The Belgium international striker has started scoring goals again and is looking like he is enjoying himself.
The 24-year-old scored the winner against Tottenham Hotspur at White Hart Lane, a hat-trick against Queens Park Rangers at Villa Park, and the consolation goal against Manchester United at Old Trafford.
Benteke has scored 10 goals and created 27 chances in 24 Premier League appearances this campaign, while having a pass accuracy of 66% and a shot accuracy of 45%.
While Villa cannot rely on the Belgian to bail them out all the time, they have a good point-gap between themselves and the relegation zone.
However, if the Villans fail to pick up anything from their upcoming games against Manchester City (away), Everton (home) and West Ham United (home), then they could find themselves looking over their shoulders.
