Andy Gray: This is how Tottenham Hotspur can challenge in Premier League next season

Andy Gray suggests that Tottenham Hotspur should avoid playing in the Europa League next season.

Former Aston Villa and Rangers striker Andy Gray has suggested on how Tottenham Hotspur can challenge in the Premier League next season.

The 59-year-old believes that Spurs should try to avoid finishing in a Europa League spot this season to make sure that they have no distractions for the 2015-16 Premier League campaign.

“This might sound daft but I wonder if Tottenham really want to qualify for the Europa League and might just fancy finishing seventh and have a good run at the league next year without any distractions,” Gray wrote on

One suspects that many Tottenham fans will agree with Gray’s ‘strategy’, especially as the North London outfit look set to miss out on a top-four finish in the Premier League yet again.

Not so long ago Mauricio Pochettino’s side were challenging for the Europa League, the League Cup and the FA Cup, along with a top-four finish.

Now, though, Tottenham look like they will end up without anything to show for their effort this campaign.

While it makes sense for Tottenham to avoid playing in the Europa League next season, one needs to remember that it gave them an alternative way of playing in the Champions League.

Had Spurs won the competition, then they could have found themselves rubbing shoulders against the likes of Real Madrid, Bayern Munich and Barcelona next season.

Perhaps claiming that the Europa League was a distraction for Tottenham is just an excuse…
