This season, Florian Thauvin has scored five goals and contributed three assists as Marseille have faltered a little, falling from leading the league before Christmas to their current standing in fourth. Although it has not been his best season, it hasn’t stopped Mercato365 linking Tottenham Hotspur to the 22-year-old winger.
Thauvin is under contract until 2018, but this season he has failed to live up to the hype that surrounded him when he joined Marseille as a 20-year-old.
After joining Lille from Bastia, Thauvin decided while winning the Under-20 World Cup that he would rather play for Marseille, so he was sold for €15 million without ever kicking a ball for the northerners.
That stigma has stuck with him, and now that he hasn’t quite delivered, his performances have come in for criticism.
Marseille will need to cut their wage bill this summer. Andre-Pierre Gignac and André Ayew are likely to leave when their contracts expire, but then OM may need to sell to raise funds to help strengthen their team.
Offers for the likes of Thauvin may be too good to turn down. Moving to the Premier League at this stage of his career would be make-or-break for the Frenchman. Either he would rise to the occasion, or he would fail to find his feet.
Spurs prefer to sign younger players that they can develop and sell on, or help grow, and Thauvin fits that profile perfectly. It is obvious that he has the desired skill set to attract a top club, it’s just unclear whether he can turn promise into consistency.
