In the past Saint-Etienne’s Mevlut Erding has been linked with various moves to Newcastle United – by the Independent, among others. From when he was at Sochaux, to Paris Saint-Germain and at his last club Rennes, he has a reputation as being a goal-scorer, but now his time in Ligue 1 looks to be coming to a close.
According to Turkish news site Sabah, the 28-year-old striker is a target for Trabzonspor in the summer and they are ready to offer him an annual salary of €2.5 million.
This season Erding has been far from first-choice, scoring only seven goals in 22 appearances and he has had to divide his time on the pitch with Dutchman Ricky van Wolfswinkel.
Saint-Etienne have one of the worst strike records in the league, but are still in contention for a place in the Champions League, but more likely the Europa League.
The salary from Trabzonspor would be easily matched by any Premier League club, so there is no reason that Newcastle couldn’t make an approach if they were still interested in the forward.
When he is feeling wanted and played in a team with the right tactics and support, he is still a good striker. Perhaps a change of scenery and league would bring the best out of a forward that is still only 28.
Erding has scored 81 goals in 250 Ligue 1 appearances, for four different clubs. His best return was the 15 he scored in his first season at PSG.
Turkey may end up being his preferred destination – although born in France he has made 37 appearances for Turkey - but Premier League clubs should definitely consider a move for the former PSG forward.
